The short answer

Can you watch BBC iPlayer abroad?

No. BBC iPlayer works only in the UK. In any other country, including the Republic of Ireland, it shows a message instead of the programme, and the live BBC channels do not play. That also applies to people who pay for a TV licence and are away on holiday.

Who decides where iPlayer works?

The BBC. In 2023 a petition asked Parliament to make the BBC open iPlayer to licence payers abroad. Parliament's petitions site rejected it on 10 May 2023: decisions about BBC iPlayer in other countries are a matter for the BBC, not for the government or Parliament.

Does the EU travel rule help?

No. The EU rule that keeps paid streaming services working on short trips (Regulation (EU) 2017/1128) no longer applies to travel between the UK and the EU and EEA. The UK government says services may still offer it of their own accord, with the content owners' permission.

Do you need a TV licence for iPlayer?

Yes, in the UK. GOV.UK says you need a TV licence to watch on-demand BBC programmes on iPlayer, and to watch any channel live on any device. It costs £180 a year from 1 April 2026.

What works outside the UK

BBC News. The BBC runs an international version of its news channel for viewers outside the UK, and many cable, satellite and IPTV providers carry it. Check your provider's channel list. More on the BBC News page.

The BBC app. Outside the UK, the BBC app (since March 2024 it replaces the international BBC News app) has BBC news articles and videos.

Other UK channels. Sky News and GB News stream live for free all over the world on their websites and YouTube. Channel 4's streaming service also works in the Republic of Ireland. Every UK channel, country by country: UK TV abroad.

What about a VPN?

We do not list a VPN as an option. Many streaming services forbid them in their terms of use, and BBC iPlayer is made for viewers in the UK. We only list official ways to watch.
